Following a trip to visit a friend in Switzerland, Phillip identified a significant gap in the South African market for affordable, high-quality snow gear
The early Natal years
Rapid Sport was born out of a genuine passion for the outdoors and a practical need for better gear. In the early 1990s, our founder, Phillip, was a top paddler competing in demanding river races like the Dusi and the Fish River. At the time, essential equipment such as splash covers and wet bags were only available as expensive overseas imports.
Determined to find a better solution, Phillip bought a sewing machine and began manufacturing his own gear from his garage in Natal. What started as a personal hobby to supply himself and his friends quickly gained a strong reputation, laying the foundation of the business we are today.
The move to Cape Town
After relocating to Cape Town in 1991, the scope of the business naturally evolved alongside Phillip’s expanding sporting interests. As he took up triathlons and road cycling, he discovered a lack of suitable kit and immediately set about designing his own. This hands-on approach soon extended to winter sports.
Following a trip to visit a friend in Switzerland, Phillip identified a significant gap in the South African market for affordable, high-quality snow gear. Rapid Sport stepped in to fill that void, creating our own range to ensure that families could access durable ski clothing without the premium price tag.
Gail and Phillip join forces
Gail met Phillip in 1997, and as their lives intertwined, so did her involvement in the business. From helping lay out fabric after hours to supporting the brand at major cycle expos, she watched Rapid Sport grow into a trusted, one-stop shop for active South Africans.
Over the years, we expanded our manufacturing capabilities to produce everything from our famous South African flag cycling shirts and custom corporate apparel to a comprehensive range of ski wear that caters to everyone from one-year-olds up to a 5XL. Everything was built on the ethos of local manufacturing, community integration, and exceptional value.
A forced reset
In August 2021 after Phillip had a serious accident, Gail took over the running of the business. Indeed, Rapid Sport’s story is one of enduring resilience. Today, alongside our incredibly loyal and skilled in-house team of cutters, machinists, and factory managers, we are proud to keep Phillip's legacy alive, and we are completely committed to providing our community with the quality activewear they have come to trust.
